Hiking and Sea Kayaking

Hiking and Sea Kayaking

Day 1, Monday:
Arrival, transfer to our hotel or pension on Rab island (2hrs1/2). Welcome drink, late dinner.

Day 2, Tuesday: Sea Kayaking.
Morning coffee and introduction of daily program. For a start we will be visiting three fascinating islands that are located on the beginning of this large cove.Sailovac,Srednjak i Maman are sand islands that are connected by shallows and the beautiful clear sea. Then, we head towards Vardaškolj(tunera) Cove passing by the Sorinjske Cliffs.Rowing along the coastline towards Cape Sorinja where we will refresh ourselves in colder sea and dive in different karrens. This is also the archeological site of 65 amforas from the first half of the 2nd Century B.C. We might spot dolphins in this aquarium if there isn't too much traffic at sea. After swimming and exploring the coast we will be heading towards Lopar passing by the Sorinj beaches that are deeply rooted in the mountain.Passing the Lopar Cove we will arrive at its breath-taking part. We will come to beautiful sandy coves, big and small with their capes bathed in clear sea with a visibility of up to 20 m in depth. We will stop at some of these coves to swim or play beach volley. We will pass the famous Sahara Bay which got its name from its sand. After passing by a few more bays and capes we will arrive at the beach of Heaven and its islands in order to arrive at Medove buža hoping we will see a large flock of bats at dusk going hunting. After about ten minutes or so, we will put up our camp in a cove and relax around the fire after dinner watching the stars.

Day 3, Wednesday: sea kayaking.
After breakfast,we will pack leaving the area as clean as we found it. We'll paddle under aslope and high cliffs of Kamenjak which gradually descends into the blue sea with an altitude of up to 70 m, arriving in Mali Žal one of the most beautiful beach of the island. This area used to be inhabited by griffon vultures, we might see them If we are lucky. After some rest we will be pass by the beaches and cliffs towards Peak Krklant ant its long stone walls gliding down from the peak of Srednjak(331 m), all away to the sea. Further, we will be approaching Vidilaka Cove and its nearby cliff which we will pass in order to get to Cape Plitki. After passing a few more coves with water springs, we will get to Mag Cove. Mag cove is completely different from the others because of its reddish color sand. Here are also located several beautifully shaped hard sand boulders with holes in them and an innate stone bridge-passage. Further, a stone fishermans hut called Tunera and now abandoned which used to serve as a cache. Past Tunera we'll approach the Maga cliffs that in some places go into dark depths. You will experience this best if you dive around them. After some rest we will be travelling further below the cliffs towards the ferry boat pier Mišnjak where this magical adventure comes to its end.
We will go back to our lodging to have dinner. Those who want will go for a little visit of the charming Rab town, then a good night of sleep will be welcome before our hiking days.

Day 4, Thursday: Hiking towards North Velebit National Park, 7/8 hours.
After breakfast, we'll take the ferry to the coast and Jablanac. There, our hiking will start right away from Zavratnica bay where the sea meets the mountain. Path begins at the spot where ferry docks and continues along the sea some 15mins till the entrance into the bay. On some spots path is cut into the cliffs and there is one sweet tunnel in bare rock. From the bay the path ascends gradually, passing by Baricevici hamlet, till it sharply ascends to Alan road. Over the road ascent continues steeply. Path winds up in many bends surmounting steep slopes. We will enjoy beautiful views towards sea and islands. This is tough and long but beautiful ascent during which we'll have to surmount 1400m of altitude. Ascent continues through the forest of Butkovic Plan. Path gains altitude steeply over the grass and through the forest till it reaches Alan pass (1400m). We will stop at Alan hut for a well deserved lunch break and, why not, a little nap ! The second part of the hiking will be much easier, almost flat. We'll walk along long grassy valleys and through beautiful forests that will bring us to Veliki Lubenovac field (1315m). The field offers one of the most romantic scenery in Velebit mountains. From there, we will climb the beautiful Veliki Kozjak peak (1629m). Veliki Kozjak has long, by beech forested crest above which groups of white fortresses rise. Cliffs of Veliki Kozjak are smooth and high and look like impregnable fortresses. In fact it is quite easy to climb, Veliki Lubenovac is at the foot, some 1.30-1.45h from the summit. When we will go down, we will have the nice surprise of finding our driver and van that will take us for an 1/2 hour drive to the mountain hut of Careva Kuca where we will enjoy a nice hiker's dinner next to the fire and spend the night in common dormitories.

Day 5, Friday: hiking the Premuzic trail, 6/7 hours.
After breakfast, our driver will take us for a short transfer to Zavizan. From there our day will start with a short stroll in the Velebit botanical garden which present a part of rich flora of Velebit, some plants are endemic and grow only on Velebit. We will continue our walk on the Premuzic trail. The path runs through the most beautiful and interesting part of the park such as Haducki and Rozanski ledges strict reserve. Premuziceva staza path is a true masterpiece, it stretches from Zavizan on North Velebit till the end of Mid Velebit. Part which winds through white stormy waves of Rozanski Kukovi and makes it a pleasant walk through this open karst museum, almost without oscillations in altitude, it is its most beautiful section. The peaks surrounding the trail offer magnificent views of the Adriatic and its islands. At the end of the walk at Alan pass (again!), our van will take us to Starigrad-Paklenica region, where we will have dinner at our lodging in hotel or pension.
